About

Sophie Lawther-Dunn

Sophie is an emerging contemporary landscape artist based in the UK specializing in acrylics and metal leaf. Predominantly self taught, she uses sweeping brushstrokes interlaced with illuminated metallics to capture the transitory nature of the near and far landscapes that move her.

Sophie studied English Literature at university, a continued love of the romantic and gothic that is echoed in the tumultuous Wuthering Heights style emotive vistas she paints.  A creative background in interior design helps to ground intuitive brushstrokes with an in depth understanding of form, colour and proportion, creating expressive, contemporary pieces.

Sophie lives and paints from her home studio near Haslemere in the North Downs and exhibits regularly while painting to commission.

"I treat the canvas as a dairy to pour out thoughts, conflicts, resolutions.  It’s an emotive and expressive process, which concludes in of a culmination of abstract forms and precise details. I largely paint Alla Prima, working from sketches, taking inspiration from the landscape and the way it resonates with me in that moment. Light plays a central role in each piece, drawing the eye and illuminating the subtly changing colours of nature.  The process of painting, essentially the journey, is the most important part for me, and these visual pathways wind their way through all of my work."
